Designed-in maintenance features of the I-70 Mississippi river bridge

2005
The new 12-lane I-70 cable stayed bridge in St. Louis will be one of the longest and widest cable stayed bridges in the world. Several requirements imposed by the owners to promote long-term durability had major effects on design and detailing features. Among these requirements were a design service life of 150 years, design for future deck replacement, and the use of a two-level seismic design with a high level design for a 2,500-year event with a performance level of "Service Immediate". This paper reviews some of the resulting unique features. For the covering abstract see ITRD E126028.
