Acreage response of sorghum to price and non-price factors in Nigeria: an evidence from Nerlove adjustment model

Acreage supply response was estimated for sorghum in Nigeria using time series data between the period 1960-61 to 2015-16 by employing Nerlove adjustment and price expectation model. The findings of the study revealed that acreage of sorghum was price inelastic and low compared to area under cultivation. Similarly, sorghum farmers responded positively to credit whereas, increased in previous maize price and rainfall impacted negatively on current sorghum production. It was inferred from the above that pricing policy during the period of study had not favoured producers and this trend ought to be reverted for sustain food self sufficiency. The study therefore recommends the need for timely distribution of adequate inputs (fertilizer and improved seed varieties) and credit supply, while effect of price can be improved by creation of commodity board to ensure efficient marketing of the crop and guarantee sustainable production.
