Evolution in electronic structures of quasi-three-dimensional Bi films: evidence for nontrivial topology of Bi

2016
Topological property of bulk Bi is still controversial between calculations and experiments. The tiny local band gap and the bulk conduction band located very close to $E_{\mathrm{F}}$ at $\bar{\mathrm{M}}$ makes the direct detection very challenging. Here we determined fine electronic structures of Bi by high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of quasi-three-dimensional (14-135 BL) Bi films. We observed evolutions of two surface bands in opposite directions as an increase of the thickness, which can be naturally understood by considering the upper and lower surface bands hybridize respectively with the conduction and valence bands. This result provides a new evidence for nontrivial topology of bulk Bi.
