Trichomonas gallinae in wild raptors on the Cape Peninsula : short communication

1992
An outbreak of avian trichomoniasis caused by Trichomonas gallinae occurred on the Cape Peninsula and surrounds in seven species of diurnal and nocturnal birds of prey. The virulence of the parasite appears to be different from that reported in the northern hemisphere. It is suggested that this disease might negatively affect the reproductive success of certain species. A survey of the epidemiology of Trichomonas gallinae in the families Columbidae, Falconidae and Strigidae will illuminate its potential to affect the viability of future populations.
