2015
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of rehabilitation exercise on cortisol, lumbar extensor muscle, VAS (Visual Analogue Scale) and ODI (Oswestry Disabillity Index) of lumbar disc herniation patients with different personality factors. METHODS: The subjects include female patients who had chronic low back pain for 6 months or more, and respectively revealed neuroticism and conscientiousness according to the Big Five model of personality. They performed the rehabilitation exercise 3 times per week for 8 weeks, and exercise program was composed of 10 minute warm-up, 50 minute main exercise and 10 minute cool down. The ratio scale of perceived exertion (RPE) was used to determine the exercise intensity. RESULTS: The two patients with different personalities had an increase in cortisol and lumbar extensor muscle but showed different increase rates. And their values of VAS and ODI dropped but showed different decease rates. CONCLUSIONS: The findings show that the rehabilitation exercise program is effective to patients with lumbar disc herniation. And it is necessary to adjust the exercise intensity and frequency according to personality factors.
