Coastal Dynamic of Teluk Lipat from Space

2018
Coastal line is very dynamics zone. The erosion and accretion process along the coastline takes place alternately. The dynamics of the coastal line also depends on their location. Teluk Lipat beach is located at the east coast of Malaysia peninsula that directly expose to the South China Sea. Due to the severe erosion, the reclamation work has been carried out in this area. So, instead of erosion and accretion, the land reclamation also contributes significant change to the coastal line. It is considered interesting to study the coastal change over spatial and time domain along this area. This study was conducted using Landsat dataset acquired over the study area for the period of 1988 to 2018. The period is then broken into 4-year time range. Water and land was distinguished by using Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI). The result shows the worst erosion event occur between 2004-2004 period. In this period 0.092 km 2 of land was eroded. Meanwhile highest accretion event occurs between 1988-1992. During this period, 0.299 km 2 of accretion take place especially at the north part of the study area. These two worst process occur before the reclamation work at 2011.
