Evaluation of Mechanical Properties of Coir and Glass Fiber Hybrid Composites

Abstract Hybrid composites have vast potential as light weight strong material in several engineering applications. The designer can obtain the required properties easily by the choice of fibers and matrix in a controlled manner. In hybrid composite the properties can be altered by using specific fiber in the same resin matrix. In the present investigation, coir glass fiber hybrid composites were made by hand layup method by varying coir fiber length and number of glass fiber mats. The mechanical properties such as tensile strength and flexural strength of the developed hybrid composites were estimated in order to evaluate the effect of coir fiber length and number of glass fiber layers. Length of coir fibers and number of glass fiber mats found to has measurable effect on various mechanical properties of hybrid composite.
