Nutritional Management of Acute Kidney Injury

2013
Acute kidney injury (AKI) – from a metabolic/nutritional point of view – is an extremely heterogenous clinical syndrome which renders it liable to the most challenging problems in clinical nutrition. Metabolism and nutrient requirements are not only determined by the acute renal dysfunction per se and by the type and intensity of renal replacement therapy (RRT) but also by the underlying disease process leading to AKI and associated complications. In many patients AKI is a systemic prooxidative, proinflammatory and hypercatabolic syndrome which exerts a profound and independent impact on morbidity and prognosis.
