Extra-articular Malunions of the Distal Radius

2021
Malunion is the most common complication of distal radius fractures. Patients with extra-articular malunion of the distal radius often experience pain, especially near the prominent ulnar head. If the distal radius is well aligned and there are no degenerative changes, an ulnar shortening osteotomy may provide pain relief. In the case of angular malunion, corrective osteotomy of the distal radius may be considered. A decision for surgery should be based on pain, functional impairment, and loss of motion.
