β-Adrenoceptor antagonists could paradoxically provide long term benefit to patients with heart failure. They have been shown to improve left ventricular function and symptoms after a 6-month period of treatment with progressively administered doses. Several mechanisms, such as restoration of cardiac β-adrenergic responsiveness, could be involved.
