The use of a digital computer for traffic control at surfers paradise, Queensland

This paper describes the system components, their functions and the control modes. Electromagnetic vehicle detectors are used to provide information on the quantity and quality of the traffic flow and also to detect stationary vehicles. The core resident control programme calculates the cycle, splits and adjusts offsets to suit vehicle progression. This programme is entered and executed each second and uses data supplied by the detectors. It also issues executive orders to operate the street controllers.
