Gamma irradiation effect on the structural and dielectric properties of Mg-Cd nanoferrites

Nanosized Mg1-xCdxFe2O4 (x=0.0, 0.2, 0.4) ferrites were synthesized by combustion method. Mg-Cd nanoferrites were irradiated by γ-rays of 60Co source and characterized by X-ray diffraction. Dielectric constant, dielectric loss tangent and AC conductivity are studied in the frequency range 100Hz-5MHz at room temperature. The spinel cubic structures of the samples were revealed by XRD. The lattice parameter increased with increase in the Cd2+ ions concentration. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss tangent found to be decrease with increasing frequency and attain constant value at higher frequency while AC conductivity of Mg-Cd ferrites was found to be increase with increasing frequency. The lattice parameters and dielectric parameters were enhanced after the irradiated by γ-rays due to the conversion of ferric ions into ferrous ions under ionizing effect of γ-irradiation. The AC conductivity values found to be increases after the γ-irradiation.
