15.24 – Geoneutrino Detection

2014
A new analytical tool in geochemistry is being developed. It is the detection of neutrinos emitted by the radioactive decay of certain elements inside the Earth – these are called geoneutrinos. Neutrinos are the most weakly interacting of the known subatomic particles. Their passage through matter is virtually unimpeded; geoneutrinos that have been emitted typically pass through the entire Earth without attenuation. Therein lies their utility. Geoneutrinos carry information from deep inside the Earth about the isotopes that produced them and the abundance of those isotopes.
