Modern Blood Banking

Transfusion medicine is a rapidly evolving discipline. In this chapter we introduce red blood cell antigen and human leukocyte antigen (HLA) systems and their impact on clinical practices. We will also touch on transfusion practice adaptations in an era of limited inventory and considerations of infectious disease risk in blood products.
