Care compensation in Latin American pension systems

2020
The article analyzes the integration of compensation measures into the social security systems of some Latin American countries, based on a review of the recognition of care as a right in the pension systems of the five following countries: the Plurinational State of Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, and Uruguay. These compensation measures translate into the effective recognition of the remuneration of women involved in unpaid care, making visible the impact that care has on women’s professional lives and pension histories. This article is based on a study carried out for the Iberoamerican Social Security Organization (OISS) using data from official statistical sources in these five countries. It concludes by calling on states to fulfill their obligations, taking into account the relationships between the right to care and social security.
