New digital processing technique for extended definition TV

1989
In Japan, the new EDTV broadcasting service (called 'Clear-Vision') will start this fall. Current television receivers have various drawbacks: interface called 'cross luminance' and 'cross color' due to imperfect Y/C separation, 'line crawling' interference, 'line flicker' due to 2:1 interlaced scanning method, and deterioration of vertical resolution. In order to reduce interference, digital TV receivers such as EDTV receivers perform motion adaptive Y/C separation and motion adaptive scanning interpolation. The key factors to improve picture quality are the precision in the motion detector and detection of the nonstandard signals. If motion and the nonstandard signals are not detected correctly, it is difficult to improve picture quality. This paper describes the motion detector and nonstandard signal detector that play the most important role in this new television receiver set for EDTV. >
