Living radical polymerization method and a polymerization catalyst

2012
There is provided a catalyst for living radical polymerization, the catalyst is inexpensive, has high activity, is environmentally friendly and does not require free radical initiator. Ionic compound having a non-metallic bond formed with a halide ion is used as a catalyst in a living radical polymerization method. Without radical or a diazo compound such as an organic peroxide initiator, by using the catalyst, by performing a radical reactive monomer having a radical polymerization unsaturated bond, can be obtained with a narrow polymer molecular weight distribution. Further, also can significantly reduce the cost of living radical polymerization using a radical initiator and preventing agents cause adverse effects (e.g., side effects). The present invention has the following advantages: low toxicity of the catalyst, a small amount of catalyst used, the catalyst has high solubility, mild reaction conditions and catalysts are odorless and colorless (not required for the molding process). The present invention as compared to conventional active agents free polymerization process is very environmentally friendly and has a higher economic efficiency. The catalyst may be applied to a variety of monomers and high molecular weight polymers can be synthesized.
