Evaluation of Human Milk Banks in Paraná - Br: a comparative study

Human milk banks (HMB) are designed to provide quality natural food to newborns. Objectives: To evaluate and compare the structure and processes of eight HMB RDC-171/2006 based on the of Parana and the Manual of Operation of HMB of ANVISA. Method: Survey of normative and comparative assessment, in which was applied the benchmarking techniques of and systematic observation and questionnaire to eight coordinators of HMB in 2009. Results: There are better practices in different HMB, as well as deficiencies relating to personnel, training, physical structure, documentation, records, availability of standard operating procedures (SOP). Discussion: There is a need to hire employees, according to legal requirements, documentation updated and available; managerial and technical training, provision of essential physical and material resources, development and delivery of SOP and supervision. Conclusion: In general, HMB present structural and that require managerial deficiencies and investment of the management, having as reference the current regulations and best practices identified.
