A Low-Cost Acquisition, Display, and Evaluation Setup for Tactile Codec Development

2018
The IEEE standardization group P1918.1.1, also referred to as Haptic Codecs Task Group, develops perceptual codecs for both kinesthetic and tactile information exchange. Currently, IEEE P1918.1.1 has an open call for contributions concerning tactile codec technology. In order to be able to develop proposals for tactile codec technology, a common hard-ware/software reference setup is required which can easily be replicated by all interested parties and which can be used to produce reference data traces. These data traces serve as the basis for performance evaluation, performance comparison, and cross-validation experiments. In this paper, we describe the reference setup for the acquisition, display and evaluation of vibrotactile signals recently proposed to and approved by IEEE P1918.1.1. In addition, we analyze the influence of the movement speed and the choice of tooltip on the obtained vibrotactile signals.
