Intradural-Extramedullary and Intramedullary Spinal Metastases

2019
Metastases to the spinal cord and spinal canal are rare but often life-threatening lesions. A multi-disciplinary evaluation is warranted to determine the ideal management strategy. Often, intradural and intramedullary tumors necessitate surgical intervention and adjuvant radiation therapy. However, this treatment protocol must take into account patient-related factors, such as overall tumor burden, patient functional status, and overall quality of life. This chapter discusses the treatment options for intradural and intramedullary spinal lesions, and provides some evidence-based treatment algorithms for management.
