Static control of cylindrical shells

2010
Static control of cylindrical shells is investigated in this study. The function of piezoelectric stresses is defined first. The piezoelectric stress contains two parts: one is caused by external electric fields and the other is induced by the strain of the piezoelectric film itself. The internal forces, moments and displacements of shell under external forces are derived using the classical elastic thin shell theory. The strains of elastic cylindrical shell can be derived from the strain functions defined by Kirchhoff & Love. The stresses of piezoelectric film induced by the applied electric field and those induced by the shell deformation can be calculated respectively and added together to calculate the control force, then the control moments and displacements of cylindrical shell are obtained. Comparing with the displacements of cylindrical shell with no piezoelectric layers, which are induced by static forces, the static control effect of piezoelectric layer to cylindrical shell panel is evaluated.
