Tensiones éticas entre educación humanista y educación para la renta

2013
This paper reflects the tension between humanistic education and education for income, against the background of Martha Nussbaum's argument in Not for Profit: Why Democracy Needs the Humanities, in the spirit of thinking of the status of education in democratic societies. The general trend in most countries has been considering economic growth as the main objective of the society, i.e., we must seek, above all, increasing the total wealth of the nation, and this goal must devote all State and society efforts in general. From this perspective, when it comes to thinking of an education system, the following questions arise: How to prepare young people for life? How to train people to understand cultural differences and critical thinking? Do values and moral sentiments really matter? And ultimately, how does the education system respond when facing deviant social practices in environments that explicitly favor economic growth and the instrumentalization of knowledge? And what pathological behaviors may be associated with this view? Therefore, if education is for people, we need to understand the problems we face in the process of transformation of students into citizens of democracy.
