Preliminary Investigation into Shielding Materials for the Electromagnetic Pulse Generated by Laser-Plasma Interaction Based on SGIII

2020
The shielding of electromagnetic pulse (EMP) is fundamental for protecting the diagnostic equipment. Although several materials have been explored for this function, the shielding of strong EMP generated by the laser-plasma interaction at the high-power laser facility has rarely been investigated. In this paper, copper, permalloy, and a phase transition oxide (vanadi-um dioxide, VO 2 ) are tested for shielding the EMP at ShenGuang III laser facility (SGIII, the largest high-power laser facility in China). The results show that copper and permalloy exhibit high-efficient shielding of EMP. And VO 2 (R) with the higher conductivity shows better shielding property than VO 2 (M). This work provides significant insights for the development of EMP shield-ina materials.
