Effect of rabbit antisecretin serum on postprandial pancreatic secretion in dogs

Abstract To determine the contribution made by endogenous secretin to pancreatic bicarbonate secretion in the postprandial state, normal rabbit serum or rabbit antisecretin serum was administered intravenously to dogs with a pancreatic fistula and gastric cannula. In the four dogs tested, plasma immunoreactive secretin concentration increased significantly after ingestion of a standard meal containing meat. In nine dogs, the administration of rabbit antisecretin serum resulted in a profound decrease in pancreatic flow and the concentration and output of pancreatic bicarbonate after the meal.
