Cross-border transportation infrastructure in North America (transportation supply)

2020
Abstract Freight transportation infrastructure is critical to managing international trade across international borders. In this context, infrastructure includes the physical facilities at the land border crossings, roadways, and rail lines that approach the border and support freight transportation, as well as the processes that are involved in the exchange of goods between countries in North America. This chapter presents a description of the transportation infrastructure that serves trade between the United States and Mexico and between the United States and Canada, including roadway and rail networks, as well as the critical nodes, which are land ports of entry or border crossings. Furthermore, an assessment of the stakeholders’ role in the border crossing process and its implications for trade movement is discussed, while identifying potential improvements in current US–Mexico cross-border truck rules.
