In Germany, about 7,200 biogas plants provide heat and electricity for more than 5.3 million households. Despite the knowledge obtained by cultivation and characterization of a number of exemplary species for both biomass degradation and methanogenesis during the past years, cultivation independent approaches point to the presence of several up to now unknown microbial species in biogas plants.
