Efficient PID controller tuning method selection to be used in excitation system of brushless synchronous generator

Key objective of excitation control system is to maintain terminal voltage of the synchronous generator at rated value. At present many rotary excitation control system are using analog type of Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR). To upgrade the performance of AVR, PID controller is provided in the forward path whose proper tuning is a challenging task. The popular and classical methods used for tuning PID controllers in industry are pole placement and pole zero cancellation Method. In this Paper PID controller is designed and tuned by using both the methods .To facilitate calculation GUI prepared for each method, which also evaluates the performance of the designed controller using MATLAB SISOTOOL platform. This paper highlights the issues that encountered in proper tuning of PID controller by both methods and comments on selection of efficient method. Sensitivity of the controller tuned by both the methods is also presented with parameter variation like loop gain ‘K’ and exciter time constant ‘te’.
