Toward Truly Water‐Soluble Rodlike Polyelectrolytes: Synthesis of Poly(para‐phenylenes) Wrapped in Ethylene Oxideand Amino Side Groups

Structural requirements are specified that must be fulfilled to get truly water‐soluble poly(p‐phenylenes). It is shown that intermolecular hydrophobic interactions have to be eliminated reliably between the macromolecules by polar side chains of appropriate design. If amino groups are introduced additionally, these polymers can act as valuable precursors of rodlike polyelectrolytes of arbitrary charge density.
