“Location, Location, Location”: Contextualizing Chinese Families in Four Geolocations

2021
The Chinese ethnic group is the largest ethnic group in the world, and the Chinese people have been living and migrating to various countries globally. Although there has been research advancement on Chinese families, very limited attention has explored the nuances within this ethnic group. Based on Bronfenbrenner’s (1977; 1995) theoretical framework, this chapter discusses the intra-ethnic group similarities and differences in Chinese families living in Canada, China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. The chapter begins with an overview of the history and modern states of these Chinese populations, and the immigration policies in Canada to provide context. Next, we discuss studies that have explored Chinese families from differing geolocations to illustrate some commonalities and differences, supporting Bronfenbrenner’s (1977; 1995) contentions. Finally, we conclude the chapter with some suggestions for future research and to those who may provide services to this diverse population.
