Optical and electrical studies of barium stannate micro rods synthesized via chemical process

2018
Transparent semiconductors have outpaced other contemporary material in the field of semiconductor industry. Ternary oxides with complex structures (pervoskites and spinels) have shown multifunctional properties e.g. ferromagnetism, piezoelectricity, superconductivity etc. To explore the field, micro rods of barium stannate (BaSnO3) were synthesized via facile chemical precipitation method. Its structural analysis has been carried out using XRD. The stannate microrods of uniform length and diameter are found to be thermally stable up to 1100°C. It shows the direct band gap of 2.8 eV and PL excitation corresponding to 2.8 eV and 2.1 eV, indicating absence of deep level impurity level. Electrical measurements further confirm that microrods of barium stannate may have formed low resistance channel (avoiding grain boundaries resistance) which will have potential application in high temperature sensors, capacitors and other room temperature applications as well.
