Corilagin induces laryngeal cancer antiproliferation and inhibits growth factor and cytokine signaling pathways in vitro and in vivo

Abstract Laryngeal cancer is a prevalent malignancy of the head and neck with a high rate of mortality. Corilagin, a natural gallic acid derivative, was isolated from PhmLlanthi Fructus, a “drug homologous food”, and its in vitro and in vivo activity were investigated. Results of our study demonstrate that corilagin has significant anti-laryngeal cancer activity in vitro and in vivo. It was observed that corilagin inhibits proliferation and migration of cancerous laryngeal cells Hep-2 and TU212 in a concentration-dependent manner and inhibits growth of transplanted tumors in nude mice without apparent signs of toxicity. The anti-cancer effects of corilagin may be attributed to the inhibition of human laryngeal cancer proliferation by activation of mitochondrial apoptotic and endoplasmic reticulum stress signaling pathways and inhibition of Akt and STAT3 pathways.
