Effect of Motivation Enhancement Therapy to Drinking Behaviors in Patients with Alcohol Induced Psychotic Disorders

Objective: to examine MET to drinking behaviors in patients with Alcohol Induced Psychotic Disorders, Inpatient department at Krongjit ward, Nakhon Ratchasima Rajanagarindra Psychotic Hospital. Methodology: Subjects were 29 Inpatient with Alcohol Induced Psychotic Disorders, which alcohol withdrawal scale (AWS score) 1 after detoxification treatment, and received individual MET 2-3 times in two weeks at ward and 2 times in two months at Outpatient department. Instruments used in this study were 1) demographic data, 2) consumption problems & treatment, 3) MET program, and 4) stage of change and drinking behavior; percent days abstinence. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results: 29 subjects were male, the mean age is 34 years. Before MET, drinking behaviors were risky and harmful drinking, 41.4% of subjects were contemplation and 34.5% determination of stage of change. After MET 93.1 % of subjects were determination to change drinking behaviors, non drinking in month 1, 3, 6, and 12 were 96.6%, 86.2%, 89.8%, and 93.2% respectively, and percent days abstinence in month 1, 3, 6, and 12 were 96.5%, 92.1%, 95.4%, and 92.3% respectively. Before and after MET percent days abstinence were significant difference (P.05). Conclusion: Results indicate that MET improve stage of change, decreased drinking behaviors, and increase percent days abstinence. Effectiveness of MET for long term follow up should be continued.
