Water mains break regularly, but the causes vary. On July 18, 2001, a freight train consisting of about 6- cars derailed in the Howard Street Tunnel, below a major business street in downtown Baltimore, Maryland. This paper describes what happened over the next several weeks when the water utility staff worked to repair this break.
