This study comprehensively analyzes continuities and changes of Suryeong system; relationship among political party, military, and government which altogether are formed under structural constraints of the Suryeong system; and power elites of Kim Jong-un’s regime. In other words, it systematically analyzes and assesses the North Korean political system by examining from various angles the interaction of structure, institutional linkage, and political actors. It then derives implications for policy formulation concerning North Korea. First, this study focuses on the leadership system of Kim Jong-un’s regime, which combines the party leadership system of Kim Il-sung’s regime and the direct leadership system of Kim Jong-il’s regime. Second, this study investigates the relations among political party, military and government of Kim Jong-un’s regime, in which there have been many changes. The political party system, which was weakened during Kim Jong-il’s regime, is being re-institutionalized, while government-military relations are undertaking many changes. Third, it scrutinizes Kim Jong-un’s leadership style, configuration and demography of the power elites and their cohesiveness. Lastly, it makes policy recommendations that would induce North Korea to change itself based on the comprehensive analyses of the political system.
