Calciphylaxis is usually nonulcerating: Risk factors, outcomes, and therapy

To the Editor: The paper on calciphylaxis by Fine and Zacharias1 in a recent issue of Kidney International did not describe the exact histopathologic findings on skin biopsy of their patients. The sine qua non of the disorder is medial calcinosis of the small arteries in the subcutis2,3. Progression leads to acute infarction of the subcutaneous adipose tissue4.
