University Hospital Administration

1999
Publisher Summary The chapter discusses issues relevant to mental health administrators and managers working in academic healthcare centers (AHCs), with particular emphasis on challenges facing psychologists and other nonphysician mental health professionals in administrative positions. Hospital-based psychologists, for example, are often strangers in a strange land, working in a system that does not understand the nature or value of psychological services and research. This chapter discusses the university hospital administration. Mental health programs are administered in a variety of organizational settings and no two administrators' situations are identical. It is helpful for administrators to be familiar with the advantages and disadvantages of various organizational models. With this knowledge, administrators developing new programs are likely to make more informed organizational decisions and those with established programs can better manage the strengths and limitations of their program's organizational structure.
