Oxcarbazepine Induced Hyponatremia in a Child with Tuberous Sclerosis: A Case Report

2013
Hyponatremia is a well-known side effect of oxcarbazepine but is generally mild and asymptomatic. Symptomatic hyponatremia is less common with oxcarbazepine and rarely seen in children. We report the case of a 4-year-old male child with a diagnosis of tuberous sclerosis who presented with hyponatremic coma and seizures after oxcarbazepine treatment. Our report highlights that oxcarbazepine-induced hyponatremia in children may be overlooked. When children under oxcarbazepine treatment have a change in consciousness or uncontrolled seizures, serum sodium should be investigated.
