This article is devoted to conception of possible mechanisms of mitochondrial dysfunction participation in atherogenesis. The main factors of mitochondrial dysfunction development in atherosclerosis are free radical production and systemic inflammation activation in intima of vessels. The consequences of mitochondrial function disturbance are ATP synthesis decrease, reactive oxygen species production, and activization of programmed cell death mechanisms. Mitochondrial dysfunction promotes to functional cell number decrease, lipoidosis development, activation of lipid peroxidation, tissue structure destabilization, stimulation of hypertrophy, inflammation, and fibrosis in tissues. During atherosenesis, processes are induced by mitochondrial dysfunction forms different «vicious cycles» with components of pathogenic mechanisms of atherosclerosis, and create favorable conditions for their realization.
