ITS DEVELOPMENTS IN THE U.S.: A TRANSIT PERSPECTIVE

1998
Fleet Management Systems have been in use in the United States for nearly three decades. However, recent events which incorporate automatic locations systems based on global positioning systems (GPS) have rapidly accelerated the need to carefully plan and integrate the wide range of available functionality. Failure to do so will result in unnecessary expense and frustration. The paper outlines the recent history of AVL system transit technology, the wide range of system functionality, how U.S. transit agencies are procuring new technology, and anticipated benefits.
