Estimation and evaluation of the hydrological status of ponds in Peruvemba Panchayat, Palakkad District, Kerala.

A Pond is considered as a good natural storehouse of fresh water as it receive water both from above (atmosphere) and below (ground water ). The present investigation was also oriented towards finding the condition of ponds for serving the needs of society. Palakkad district in Kerala is a playground of vagaries of weather phenomenas. The selected area ie, Peruvemba in Palakkad is prone for receiving excess water in june to september and extreme deficiency of water in all other months. Study regarding the condition of ponds in Peruvemb Panchayat in Palakkad focussed three major areas, classification of ponds based on "filled" "semi dried" and "dried". The report was generated based on volume of water in each ponds in successive years. In the second case study conducted on finding the amount of water which is left in these ponds after evaporation. Here a data was created using water balance according to Thornthwait's method. In the third case the local water table of the region was correlated with the condition of ponds in this panchayat. The results revealed that the stresses of majority of ponds are in a pathetic condition with more dependence and least amount of water storing in more than half of the year.
