Some Toxic and Antifeeding Effects of Du‐Ter on the Cotton Leafworm Spodoptera littoralis Boisd.

Abstract The toxic and antifeeding effects of Du-Ter (Triphenyl-tin-hydroxide) on the cotton leaf-worm, Spodoptera littoralis Boisd. was investigated, using the topical technique and the direct injection technique through the buccal cavity. The following dosages of the active ingredient, dissolved in acetone, were tested against the third instar larva, 100, 200, 400, 600, 800, and 1000 ppm. Du-Ter showed a stonger lethal effect on the cotton leafworm as a stomach poison. Percentages of non fed larvae were evidently much higher when insects were treated orally than topically. The feeding capacity of the third instar larvae was very much reduced due to applying Du-Ter orally. Treated larvae with 100 and 800 ppm consumed an average leaf areas of 1.29 and 0.04 cm2 compared to 10.9 cm2 devoured b the untreated larva, during 3 days. Zusammenfassung Toxische und fraβhemmende Wirkungen von Du-Ter auf die Baumwolleule, Spodoptera littoralis Boisd. Es wurden die Wirkungen von Du-Ter (Triphenyl-tin-hydroxid) auf die Raupen von S. littoralis untersucht, wobei das Mittel oral und topical injiziert wurde. Die Dosierungen waren: 100, 200, 400, 600, 800 und 1000 ppm. Die abtotende Wirkung von Du-Ter auf die L3-Raupen war bei oraler Verabreichung (als Magengift) starker als bei topicaler. Die Fraβkapazitat der Raupen wurde nach oraler Applikation stark vermindert. Mit 100 und 800 ppm behandelte Raupen verzehrten innerhalb von 3 Tagen eine durchschnittliche Blattflache von 1,29 bzw. 0,04 cm2 gegenuber 10,9 cm2 bei nichtbehandelten Raupen.
