Challenges, issues, and problems with zero-waste tools

2021
Abstract Zero waste (ZW) is an idealistic concept to face the waste management problems in our community. In the past decades, various schemes for handling solid waste have been adopted which includes an advanced system of Reuse, Recycle and Recovery (3R). Stressing on 3R concepts, the economic feasibility is not stabilized over a period of time. But still, there is a wide range of support from the stakeholders and the community leaders for attaining higher efficiency in ZW generation. More specifically, countries like Sweden were following the concept of modern waste management to reduce the generation of waste. This chapter aims to identify the challenges, issues, and problems on ZW tools concerning socio-economic and environmental health aspects. This chapter highlights the existing challenges faced in the recovery of metals and other constituents which nearly fugitive during anthropogenic activities. This chapter also suggested the strategic action plans that can be implemented for ZW communities. Subsequently, the study also focuses on the recovery of lost resources in various industrials domains. In this context, the proposed study enhances the local authorities and stakeholders to develop their ZW strategies and action plans.
