Optimization under Uncertainty via CometBoards

CometBoards is a general-purpose optimization tool for multidisciplinary applications. It has been successfully applied for structural design optimization, subsonic and supersonic aircraft problems, and different types of jet engine problems. However, the design optimization evaluated from deterministic parameters may not achieve the desired optimal goal or may become infeasible. These problems prohibit the application of the current design optimization methods. In this study, an extension approach of optimization for CometBoards, including uncertainty structural parameters, is presented. Based on the perturbation method, the first- and second-order approximations of mean value and covariance of the structural responses are provided through the first two statistical moments of the input random parameters using Integrated Force Method (IFM).
