Recent developments in COREX technology

1996
The COREX Process is a smelting reduction process, where coal is used directly in a melter gasifier as a reducing agent, eliminating the need for a blast furnace and coke oven. In addition, lump ore can be directly fed into the system which bypasses the sintering or pelletizing plants necessary in the conventional hot metal production. The COREX Process also provides sufficient energy for cogeneration purposes and, perhaps most significant of all, as environmental legislation toughens, harmful emissions are much less than with the blast furnace/coke oven route.
