Lean Six Sigma Application to Improve a Water Bottling Process

2018
This paper presents an application of Lean Six Sigma (LSS) methodology to improve the performance of a water bottling process. The LSS method is widely applied across the manufacturing sector with the aim of increasing the efficiency of production processes and instituting continuous improvement. The five stages of the Six Sigma Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control (DMAIC) process and the relevant lean techniques were adapted to resolve specific efficiency and quality issues within the water bottling process. The LSS application has resulted in multiples process improvements including a decrease in reported errors and defective bottles, an increase in compliance with established standards and guidelines, and a reduced process lead time. This paper addresses the practical aspects of LSS application to water bottling and highlights the complementary role of lean efficiency and Six Sigma quality. The presented LSS application can be adapted to similar water bottling processes as well as other industrial applications.
