Katana : Spousal Bereavement and Continuing Bonds

2020
Katana began life as an ordinary girl, Tatsu, except for her proficiency in martial arts. In her origin story, Katana’s identity shifts from that of a young, happily married wife and mother to that of a young, bereaved mother and a widow, who was present at the scene of the brutal deaths of her family. Katana’s experience of continuing bonds is most clearly demonstrated in her ongoing connection to her husband through Soultaker. The labeling of dysfunction was implied by another character with regard to Katana in a scene from Suicide Squad, when she was seen holding Soultaker and talking with her husband. After initially hearing his voice as she attempted to save their children, Katana maintains ongoing communication with Maseo through Soultaker. With Katana, we see that she often seeks guidance from her husband’s soul in the sword on whether she should join certain teams on adventures.
