Commentary on: The Safe Labiaplasty: A Study of Nerve Density in Labia Minora and Its Implications

2016
This paper1 is reassuring that the nerve supply to the labia minora is preserved in most mainstream conservative labiaplasty techniques. However, it does not state whether labia minora presence is a significant aspect of female sexual gratification, and I do not know of any study that clarifies labial sensory significance. Female sexual gratification is almost certainly due to many factors including stimulation of the clitoris, clitoral frenula, and internally to the vagina and G-spot. In addition, patient confidence and comfort in appearance psychologically affects sexuality. Since the authors state that “the cutaneous nerve bundles originate from superior to inferior and tend to course more readily along the most outer edge of labia minora,” I would theorize that the wedge techniques are probably more reliable in maintaining labial sensation as they preserve a large amount of the labial outer edge. I have performed thousands of central wedge labiaplasties, often combined with clitoral repositioning, clitoral hood reduction, clitoral reductions, and labia majora reductions. I have not had patients complaining of loss of sensation or sexual satisfaction.2 If so, …
