Reconstruction of the first metacarpal bone with an autologous non-vascularized fibular graft after enchondroma resection.

2021
Abstract Enchondroma is a well-known benign tumor of the skeleton. Treatment options include intralesional curettage with or without filling by cancellous bone or, in very small asymptomatic lesions, non-operative management. We report on a symptomatic expansive enchondroma of the first metacarpal bone requiring complete removal of the bone and replacement by free autologous non-vascularized fibula graft. In addition to the complex surgical technique involving reconstruction of a trapezium-fibula neo-joint, this case highlights the satisfactory clinical outcome at 6 months’ follow up. We recommend this technique for patients with benign or malignant expansive tumor of the hand.
