Novel techniques for the characterization of ultrashort laser pulses

Novel techniques for the characterization of ultrashort optical pulses are reviewed. Phase sensitive auto- and cross-correlation techniques are described. The extension of autocorrelation methods to shorter wavelengths reaching the x-ray regime is discussed. Future work should concentrate on reliable algorithms for phase retrieval of optical pulses and the development of methods to investigate subfemtosecond pulses.
