Developing Black British identities

The purpose of this study is to examine Black British identity development. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 Black British female managers working within various sectors of Children and Young People’s Services (CYPS). Interview transcripts were analysed by using constructivist grounded theory approaches. The key themes that emerged centred upon factors influencing the development of Black British women’s identities and their perceptions of what it means to be a Black British female manager in the UK. This study provides decision-makers with vital information that can help reduce disparities within the CYPS. While the study is centred on a small multi-sectorial sample, a larger population—together with an in-depth look at one organisation within a CYPS—would add credibility to the findings presented here.
